Lure Coursing
Lure Coursing is a sport that focuses on the Natural abilities God gave the sight hound. A course is
set out using a series of pulleys with a plastic bag attached to a string and powered by a generator.
The course will have turns designed to replicate the flight of live prey. The sport allows for a safe,
controlled setting for the hounds to test their natural hunting skills, speed and agility.

You may be asking, What is a sight hound?
It is really pretty simple they are breeds of hounds that hunt their prey by sight. This is why they will
follow the lure that is kept just in front of them. A scent hound uses their nose to track their prey. The
basenji has the ability to use both, but if you ever sit and observe them it will soon become quite
apparent how visually aware they are. I get tickled sometimes when I look out in the yard and one of
them will be intently watching a bird in the sky, or chasing a butterfly as it flits around. When walking
them it is wise to also visually scan your surroundings because believe me they will see the bunny or
cat and it helps to be prepared for the natural reaction such a sight will evoke.
Though our primary focus continues to be conformation showing I have acquired an admiration for the
field events. It is so much fun and very relaxing to see the dogs enjoying what comes so natural. We
are just starting out 2006 being our first year. If you would like to keep track of how we progress I
have set up a page with that information.

Heartland Coursing Association has a wonderful web site that has lots of information about coursing
and can better explain to you what is involved in the sport  than I can. Just click on the name and you
will be directed to their web site.
