What's Happening Around Here!
2008
10/01/08
We have been trying to get everything back in order around here. Larry has been busy
getting some projects at work wrapped up as well as the other things that pile up when you
are out for a week.
We had a lot of fun in Dallas. We met lots of people we had only conversed with
electronically. It was interesting putting faces with names. We also got the opportunity to
see Lola's mother and as an added treat got  to meet her breeder who was here from
Australia. Sydney was so sweet and it was obvious though Lola is very much her fathers
daughter she also acquired some wonderful qualities from her mother. Bev was very nice
and we learned a lot from our visits with her.  While I am talking about Lola I will tell you we
were so pleased with her presentation at her first National. She got a third placement in a
class of nice girls. We thought she looked beautiful and she made us very proud. As Lola
turned 10 mo. old the 21st we had been hoping that she would not come into season until we
got home from Texas. We didn't want to be forced to spend a week in close quarters with
her in season as well as the 2 boys. Well we headed home Sunday afternoon stopping at
Larry's Mom and Dads for the night. When I took her out to potty Monday morning she was
spotting so that turned at pretty well too.  I must say I can't wait until she is out so that life
can get back to NORMAL!!!! She does not at all appreciate segregation and isn't shy about
voicing her protests. We entered Presley in Best of Breed as a personal matter of the heart
for me. Though we are convinced he is beautiful and a very solid representative of the
standard we also knew that Nationals is about the Cream of The Crop coming together to
compete for Best of Breed. I stood and watched Presley in that arena with such a feeling of
pride and joy. He looked wonderful and was awarded with the prestige of making the first
cut. It was the icing on an already wonderful week for us.  I will get some pictures posted
from Dallas sometime this week or next.

9/17/08
We are having lots of fun in Texas. Southfork is wonderful!!! We watched coursing
yesterday and watched Quinn win first place in the Field Champions class. After the trial
was completed and ribbons and awards were passed out they ran some practice runs.
Presley was delighted to get to chase the bunny.  We are having such a good time and have
made some plans to see some area attractions with Dave and Debbie. Will let you know
where and what when I know for sure.  We so needed this week to just relax and visit. It is
true Laughter is the best medicine.
9/08/08
We have posted pictures of Cameron's New smile! He is home and doing wonderful!
9/06/08
I have been adding pictures to the family pages. I have added pictures of William's T-ball
and updated Scotty, Cameron and Tyler's pages. I also got quite a few from the reunion this
summer. I still have Abbi and Will's swimming lessons to get posted and Abbi's softball
pictures. I need to get them done before soccer starts and I get way behind. They each had
a game today but since Larry is working today we missed them.
We went out with Jimmy and Annie last night and had a really good time catching up. After
dinner at Chilli's we walked the mall and then headed to Kohl's. It was like old times and we
really must keep in better contact. Good friends are way too important to let slip away.
This coming week is sure to be a busy one. I have so much to get done before we head to
Nationals. We are really looking forward to spending some time with good friends and
getting to see all the wonderful curly tails and the opportunity to show off our own a bit.
Cameron had his 1st surgery this past week and we are pleased to report all went well
and he is doing great.

8/25/08
Ok Shelly and anyone else who has been looking for updates!  I have started but have
quite a few more pictures to get uploaded from the summer. I have several more taken at
the family reunion and Abbi and William from both swimming lessons and baseball.
It has been a hot summer and we have been pretty busy. We have rooted on both Abbi and
William in baseball. MacKenzie has turned 2 and is really starting to make her opinion
known. I got to take both Abbi and William to swimming lessons a few times and got some
wonderful pictures of our little swimmers.
Scott and Denise welcomed little Scotty to the family about 6 weeks ago and Tyler turned a
year old. Both Matt and Alissa celebrated birthdays this month also.
Justin is recovering from an injury at work and hopefully will be able to get back to work
soon. He and Paige are still dating. Ashli is still loving her job and the kids love her dearly.
She and Dylan are becoming race track regulars it seems.
We also lost Dear Tinker who was such a fixture at Mom and Dad's. We all will miss her
dearly for a very long time.
We have started showing Lola this summer also. She has been out 4 weekends and has a
Reserve to a major and just yesterday won her first points by taking a 3 point major in
Kansas City. She is still just as sweet as can be and we are really enjoying what she brings
to our home.  I am sure I forgot some things but I will try and make myself post news each
week whether we have anything monumental or not so be prepared you may just read that I
did laundry, helped Josh with school, bathed the dogs, cooked dinner, mopped the floor......

6/21/08
It has been awhile since I have posted anything here and a lot has been going on. The
reunion was a huge success. We had 100% attendance and I want to thank each and
everyone of you for making it such a special weekend.
It has been a rough day as we had to say good-bye to Sully. It was an unfortunate incident
and we are filled with so many we should haves.  We had decided to take the girls walking
first and Presley and Tucker slipped out the door also. I was able to catch Tuck quickly and
slip him into the house and went to snag Presley. When it became obvious it was going to be
a bit of a fiasco as he was playing a rather speedy game of tag with a neighborhood dog in
the street no less, Larry went to get the van. He put the girls who were on leads into the
house and grabbed the keys. We finally got Presley and came home to find all was not well
in the house. We assume with the adrenalin running full steam the girls got their leads
wrapped around Sully's stand knocking him to the floor where he was no match for the
basenjis. Like I said we both blame ourselves for if I had crated the boys before opening the
door none of it would of taken place and Larry wishes he had slipped the leads off the girls
but at the time was worried as Presley was heading toward a busy intersection. We both
knew better and that is the part that stings so bad as it could of been prevented. All of our
regrets couldn't  bring him back so today I got to do something I never thought I would ever
be able to do again because he had decided a few years ago that Larry was his preferred
person.  I held him close and kissed the top of his head and whispered he was a good baby
bird. We will miss you Sully and the "Hello Baby, How Are you? " that greeted us for 14
years upon walking into the living room.

5/28/08
Just wanted to remind everyone about the reunion this weekend. Friday night bring a
Mexican side dish and on Saturday a side dish that goes with BBQ. We are really looking
forward to seeing you all.  Mom and Dad are so excited about this. I also added new pictures
of my grand babies. There is a link on the family events page for picture of them together
and if you go to their individual pages there are new pictures also. As you can see they are
as beautiful as ever and we are so proud of them.

5/23/08
We are so Happy to announce we have another beautiful baby boy in the family to love.
Cameron James Combs weighs 6lb. and 15 oz and is 19 1/2 inches long. I am not sure
exactly what time he was born but he and Kayla are both doing good. Congratulations to
Kayla, Grandma Bev and Aunt Cori. We can't wait to get our chance to cuddle him too.

5/19/08
We have been enjoying some wonderful weather. Everything is turning green and pretty.
Last weekend we drove to Kansas City Friday afternoon. After checking into our room and
eating lunch Larry and I strolled through Kohls. I needed to find a red shirt to wear the next
day and Larry needed some new jeans. When we got back to the room there was just a bit of
time to relax before I had to drop Joshua and Larry off at the Royals game where Ashli and
Dylan were going to meet them.  I spent the evening at the room with Tuck, Presley and Lola
who provided me with enjoyable and entertaining company. The Royals lost but I think they
had a good time. The next day Larry and I made an emergency early morning trip to
Walmart on our way to the expo because I forgot when traveling with a basenji puppy it is
not a good idea to lay your clothes out on the bed when going to take your shower. I knew
something was up when I came out of the bathroom and Tuck and Presley were both laying
side by side outside the door. Miss Lola was on the bed making adjustments to her new sling
shot. <g> We had a really nice time at the Canine Experience. Tucker was the perfect
Basenji ambassador by accompanying a little girl into the ring for the first time as a Jr.
Handler. Much to our delight Miss Lola also surprised us by acting the perfect lady when
she got her chance to enter the ring.
Last night we went to Paige's high school graduation. William went with us and I bet the lady
in front of us wished she had picked a different seat. Really he was very good considering
we were there for 2 hours. Afterward we went for ice cream with Paige and her family.
Congrats Paige on this momentous milestone in your life.
Well I need to get going as I have a lot to get done today.

4/22/08
Ok The Reunion Information is up and running. Make sure you contact Amber or your family
rep to order your T-Shirts. Guess who is going to be a big brother? Oh Sponge Bob himself,
Danny Johnson. I wonder if the new baby will enjoy eating all the crabby patties that his
brother will fix for him? <g> Jeremy sent new pictures of Saydie that I posted on the family
events page. She is sure growing up and is as cute as can be. Mary also sent me new
pictures of April's family. I added them also so you can look for yourself at how much the
kids have grown and how cute they are.
The weather here has finally become warm enough to enjoy being outside. I have to start
early to get my walking in now that I have 4 rounds instead of just 2. I decided that instead of
walking them 2 at a time I would take each one individually.  This decision turned out to be
very wise as Saturday Tucker and I were attacked by a dog. Not sure how I would of been
able to keep any semblance of control in that kind of situation with 2 of them.  We are both
fine though it was pretty scary at the time.
Well I also have my first sunburn of the season can you believe it. Saturday we helped the
neighbor put up a swing set for the kids and I was out longer than I thought I would be. Oh
well I guess I got my reminder about sun screen early this year.
Larry won Royals tickets at work  and we have plans for the following day in Kansas City so
we decided to get a motel room instead of driving back and forth. Have you seen the gas
prices? It is actually cheaper to stay in a motel than fill the gas tank so that is what we are
doing. Since we have 4 tickets and Joshua doesn't want to stay and go with us Saturday this
is the plan. We will go over Friday and check into the Motel and Ashli and Dylan will drive
over when they get off work. I will stay at the room with the dogs and Larry and the 3 kids
will go to the game and then Josh will ride home with them. I think it worked out perfectly
though Dylan is a bit concerned about the Kiss cam. <g>
We are getting excited about Nationals this fall. We haven't been able to attend one since
2005 and that was before we really knew anyone so this time will be even more fun. We
decide that we were going to go for the whole week. What could be better than a week of
being around 100's of basenjis and their people? I already have our room reserved and I am
sure it will be time to go before I know it.  We did find out a couple of weeks ago that we will
not be able to show Lola in sweepstakes after all. Her breeder is going to be judging them
so we will have to wait for the regular classes.

4/14/08
I know it has been awhile since I have posted news. I have made several new posts
throughout the site this month for those of you who took the time to search on your own. <g>
I will go ahead and mention some of the areas of the site that have had some updates. The
plans for the reunion are starting to develop. I added links for the schedule, a page that will
have information for ordering reunion T-Shirts as well as a page with contact information. I
need Tracy's email address so if anyone has it please send it to me so I can link it also. We
are really excited about this and I was at Mom and Dad's yesterday and they are really
looking forward to this. Please make every possible effort to make this dream of theirs into
reality. Let's see we found out baby Garcia is a BOY and we even have his first picture on his
page. Scott and Denise are delighted I am sure. You may of seen the pictures taken the
night of the Billy Ray concert. We laughed so hard that night and I am so glad we went. I had
no idea Connie could dance like that. <g> We are pleased that Dave is moving along well
with his treatments and we are praying for a complete recovery. Keep him and the whole
family in your prayers. Soccer season is upon us and Abbi is playing again this year. Papa
and I haven't made it to a game yet but will need to correct that as soon as we can. Matt is
also once again coaching Abbi's t-ball team this summer. Not sure if it is still t-ball or if they
have moved up. I have some pictures of the kids I need to get added to the site. I will get that
done as soon as I have the time to do it right. I want to re adjust the pages so that you see
newer ones first and then you can go back and look at older ones if you choose. It isn't hard
just time consuming as I need to work the navigation bars. I will let you know when I get it
done. We were all completely excited about the Jayhawk win to claim the Championship
Title. I bet the Memphis portion of the family had a very interesting evening. I am sure the
Jayhawk blood beating in the veins of some made for a bit of conflict. Tony, it was all I could
do not to send you a Championship shirt or at least one for Carter and Camden. I am sure
the fact that Memphis was first runner up gave you a bit of comfort. Hang in there, you are in
our thoughts! <g>
We have been out of town the last 2 weekends with the basenjis. We went to Wichita one
weekend to a show. We only entered Presley one day and he looked wonderful. That is an
honest opinion because I have pictures to prove it.  Larry thought he was going to be
showing for someone. They didn't show up but it turned out he ended up in the ring anyway.
He loves to show so was happy to help out. We laughed because he walked in in Jeans and a
T-shirt 5 minutes before ring time and was able to run to the van, get a suit and managed to
be dressed and ready with a minute to spare. Lola is starting to emerge from the puppy
uglies! Each day we see changes and glimpses of the show puppy we dreamed of. Brenda
sent me pictures of her litter sister Izzy that I added a link to Lola's page. We are really
excited to see this litter mature and very pleased we have a piece of the pie. Speaking of
Lola she is settling in to the family very well and traveled both weekends with us like a
seasoned traveler. She has also adapted very well to her new diet. We feed raw and she has
had no problems and seems to be thriving. She is still extreemly sweet and is as busy as
puppy should be. I have posted pictures of all four of ours together in the photo gallery. You
can not imagine how happy we are that they are functioning as a complete pack unless of
course you have basenjis then you know what a big deal that is.  Not sure when we will show
again. Lola can't show until after May 21st . We haven't really been working with her much
more than stacking her up everyday as she has been in the middle of teething. She does
walk with the rest of the gang on daily walks but we haven't moved her on a show lead. It
may prove to be entertaining as she has a bit of a stubborn streak.
Well guys I need to get moving. William spent the night last night and I expect him any
moment to ask for pancakes. I will try and post more later today if I get a chance.

3/20/08
Emily sent new pictures of the boys and I got them posted to the Family event page. They
are sure growing like weeds and are as cute as can be. Sharon sent new pictures of Tyler
also and they are posted. He looks so much like his daddy it is like looking through a window
to the past. What a handsome little guy. We should find out soon whether there will be a new
baby Girl Garcia or Baby Boy Garcia. I hope it is a girl but we will all be tickled with what
ever we get. I just think Sharon would have a blast buying all the girly stuff since she already
has Tyler to get the boy stuff for.

3/19/08
It has been awhile since I updated the news around here. If you have looked around the site
at all you know that Lola has taken residence and has made herself right at home. We
picked her up March 8 in Columbia at the show. We didn't get entered in the show ourselves
due to a technical problem but had a good time visiting. There were several puppies at the
show and our grooming table became puppy evaluation station! It was pretty neat to have a
front row seat and getting to hear and see the process. We were also delighted to get to see
two of the most recent African imports only having been in the USA for a month. They were
very typy and obviously 100% basenji.
Now just a bit about our new baby. We are so grateful to Brenda for thinking of us and
allowing us to make Lola part of our family. She is such a sweet girl. She is so much like our
Tucker that I swear they are related somehow. If not genetically they are definitely siblings
by choice. We could not ask for a better temperament and we feel like she was custom
made especially for our home. Tuck has been so true to form and loves the little girl and was
the first to welcome her. Much to our surprise and delight Milly too has been very receptive.
This is not typical as Basenjis often have same sex aggression issues besides the fact Milly
isn't known to be hospitable regardless of sex. Gosh how could we be so lucky! I have to say
the adjustment has been hardest on Presley. He was fine with her until she jumped up on the
bed by me. He has a bit of jealousy creep in on him from time to time. It was pretty
humorous because when Lola would get a toy out of the basket Presley would take it away
and carry it back to the basket. He has finally given in and played with her a bit but every
once in awhile will remember he is not happy about her being here and go back to pouting. I
keep telling him he has nothing to worry about that his spot in my heart and lap is secure. He
will always be my brindle brat.
We had a really nice time last Friday night when Dylan came out to dinner. It was fun getting
to know him a little better. Ashli being our only girl has grown up being Daddy's princess. It
is comforting to know that she has chosen to date someone who treats her with the respect
and care we have raised her to expect. Anything else is totally unacceptable to us. I pray the
parents of any girl our sons date can say the same.
Well Mary and Randy as well as April and Troy and Aren came up from Mississippi so we
went out Saturday evening to see them. We had a really nice visit. Got to see Camden for the
first time. Larry calls him Carter junior. The two boys do look a lot alike. All the kids are
growing and Karlee is doing well after her latest surgery.
It is spring break this week and Matt and Alissa have taken some days off work. They
brought the kids out this afternoon to spend the night so they could go away by themselves
for the night. I hope the weather is nice tomorrow so we can go to the park. We don't get
Abbi very often since she is in school now so am looking forward to spending some time with
her. William is in love with Lola and has really enjoyed playing with her. I will snap some
pictures tomorrow.
Ashli came home early today sick. Hopefully she is feeling better tomorrow and we don't all
come down with it. I really am not in the mood! <g>

3/05/08
Well We went to Abbi's 1st school program last night. It was really cute and of course she
was the cutest one in the program. They wore antennas and sang songs about bugs.
We are getting pretty excited because we will soon get to meet Miss Lola in person. It seems
like we have been waiting a long time. Not quite as long as we anticipated Tucker four years
ago but still seems like we have been looking at pictures of her for quite awhile.
We are all concerned about Dave Painter, and hope that they find out some better news.
Please keep him and Elaine in your prayers.

2/29/08
Happy Leap Year!
Wednesday I started not feeling well and I went to bed with a fever and spent all day
yesterday on the sofa. Funny thing Larry came home early Wed. not feeling well and ended
up staying home to take care of me Thursday. We are both much better today though I did
find myself napping quite a bit today.
Joshua took care of William and MacKenzie today for Matt and they must of wore him out
because he has already headed to bed and it isn't even 9:00. Not sure what Justy has
planned for tonight but he isn't home. Ashli and Dylan are seeing a movie tonight and Larry
is watching What Not To Wear. As soon as I am done I plan to head to the love seat to
probably take a nap before bed time. What ever this bug is it sure zaps a person of their
energy. Real exciting huh?
A week from today we will finally get to see Miss Lola. We are really getting anxious and are
quite proud of the fact we have managed to wait. Seriously guys we saw our first picture of
her January 11th so it has been awhile. We have decided that Tucker will be the first of the
gang to meet her. He is our gentleman and the one we feel will be the safest bet for a good
first impression. We think Presley will be fine also until she attempts to get on my lap. He has
a tendency to think that I am his personal property. Now Milly..... we are going to go very
cautious with her. She wasn't at all amused when Presley joined the family and we have an
idea Lola isn't going to just make her want to dance either. We are determined to go into this
with a positive attitude and hopefully the whole pack will follow our lead.
The weather is supposed to be wonderful tomorrow and I plan on soaking up my fair share. I
have got to get the rest of this bug baked out of me.

2/22/08
Her Name is Lola, She is a showgirl. He official AKC name is Signet Dangerous Liaison. We
are really excited and will be doing good to wait the 3 weeks to pick her up. <g>

2/17/08
Last night we made a monumental decision concerning our future in basenjis. We are so
excited to announce that soon we are going to add a little color to the mix around here. Yes,
Larry is finally going to get his black basenji. She is coming from Signet Basenjis in Texas.
You can find out more about her by going to the Look At Me link on the directory. We haven't
settled on a name yet but as soon as we do I will be sure and let you know. We want to take a
minute and thank Brenda Cassell for her guidance, advice and trusting us with such a
special little girl. We are expecting great things and are looking forward to showing this girl
as well as welcoming her into our hearts and home.
Well the weather turned nasty yet again and we were snowed in this morning as the
interstate was closed. It is melting like crazy now and turning into a soupy mess. Yesterday
we went in to see Matt's new toy. You can see a picture of it on the family events page.

2/14/08
                                      Happy Valentines Day everyone!
The Birthday parties are over for a while. William celebrated at Pizza Hut on Sunday and it
was a lot of fun. "Cars" were the hot item and William was quite pleased.
Well you might notice that there is a new page being added to the directory. That is because
the puppy stork is circling our house. You can tell by the color of the page that it is a girl, but
that is the only detail I am giving until things are completely settled. This is such a big deal to
us and one that we have not taken lightly. Keep checking back and one day you will find
pictures and all the specific information. Yes, I know we are crazy!
The weather is getting ready to turn cold and nasty again. I am so ready for spring I can
hardly see straight. Joshua is sick today and I am hoping it skips right over the rest of us. I
had Will and MacKenzie yesterday and we went into the bookstore and worked until I had to
take Justin to pick up his car. Yes I think the boy is building a brand new car piece by piece.
This time it was the fuel pump. Hopefully all Birch cars will keep running well from this point
on. Really taking it's toll on the pocket book.
The twins are growing. They are both over 10 lbs now and I haven't seen them in awhile but
bet they are really getting cute. If someone send me pictures I will post them. Hint hint
Connie and Emily! I also could use updated pictures from down south. I won't mention
names because you all know who you are and I know you have cameras.
Well not too much happening but thought I had better post something so I don't lose my loyal
reader.

2/08/08
Well Another Birthday Party. Our lovely Miss Abbigail is turning 7 years old tomorrow and
we had pizza, cake and ice cream this evening to celebrate. Abbi has a dozen little girls over
for a slumber party and when we left the house was rocking. William and MacKenzie came
home with us to spend the night.

2/05/08
Happy 20th Birthday Ashli. This was hard for Larry to realize his baby girl is not even a
teenager anymore. We are so proud of the beautiful, sweet and responsible young lady that
you have become.

2/03/08
We drove to St. Joe to the dog show to say good-bye to Jenn and Erik who are moving to
Colorado.  We had a good time though we felt rather strange not having a dog with us.
Enjoyed seeing Dyan and getting a sample of her new specialty coffee. I predict she is going
to be a huge success and a favorite among the vendors at upcoming shows.

2/02/08
Happy 4th Birthday William! Gosh I can't believe our boy is already 4. We stopped by to give
him a Quillow I made him and had Chili and Hot dogs with the kids. It was fun and we enjoyed
spending some time just enjoying them all. William will have his Party Sunday though we did
have birthday brownies.

2/01/08
Happy Birthday Larry! I won't say how old you are because I don't plan on telling mine in
August.

1/31/08
Today marks our 4th anniversary of Basenji ownership. We affectionately call it Tucker Day!
January 31, 2004 we brought home our first bundle of basenji boy and have been forever
changed.

1/17/08
Congratulations to Tony and Aren and Big brother Carter on the arrival of Camden Randall.
Camden arrived yesterday at 8:30 pm and weighed 7 lbs and is 19 1/2" long. Everyone is
doing great and Grandpa sent me pictures that I have posted to the Family events page.
Click on their picture for more pictures.

1/10/08
Well it is cold and I am tired of Winter! I know it is only January but I am really looking
forward to nice weather. Congrats to Isaac and Sarah on their new little ones. I am so glad I
could be there..... well almost.... Ok as close as a telephone can get you! :)
Will and I made cinnamon rolls today. We made a big mess but they were good and we had
fun.

1/01/08
Happy New Year Everyone! We hope to make this year the best so far!9/
