How Presley became a Birch Basenji
I have always admired the brindle variety of various breeds, so it wasn't surprising when we saw a brindle basenji in a show magazine it stood out to me. I kept going back and looking at this picture for several months. Have you ever had a conversation with someone along the lines of someday.......? Well Larry and I were having one of those conversations one day. I described to him the dog that I one day wanted for my own. It would be a male of course, I tend to be drawn to the males for some reason. The brindle had to be the darker richer variety, reminiscent of a boxer I once adored. I wanted a white collar, a spot on the neck would be cool too. A little bit of white on the face would be my preference. Hey when you are talking about someday you can ask for exacts. I was pretty specific in what I wanted. Without question it had to be show quality, we enjoy showing and a conformation Champion takes up the same amount of space, requires the same amount of attention and makes just as good of a companion as pet quality. Besides this was my someday wish so I could ask for it all. The conversation ended and I really didn't think too much about it. Larry and I are the nutty people you hear about who love going to the shows and staying till the "Best In Show" is announced. We always have even the years we weren't showing. Anyway we were watching groups and I realized I had left the camera in the van, so Larry went out to get it. I was beginning to think he had gotten lost, when he comes back and hands me the camera and a piece of paper with an email address. I looked at it funny and he said this lady is going to be sending you a picture of a 3 wk old brindle male. I said Why, we don't need another puppy till we get the two we have finished. Sure enough I received pictures of the cutest, chubbiest baby. He was as cute as a button but way too young to know if he was going to be show quality. I wrote back and said I would be interested in seeing updated pictures of him when his show potential could be determined. All the while telling myself that we didn't need another puppy besides he may not turn out to be a show prospect. But, I will admit I checked my email very regularly when that week came around. I got the pictures and fell instantly in love, but was still trying to be grounded. Larry and I made arrangements to drive down and see him in person. We left with a "we will talk about it and give you a call this evening". I was dragging my feet, saying it would really be a luxury purchase, as we really didn't NEED another puppy. We drove directly to a meeting we had scheduled at church. We were sitting there and Larry gets up, I asked him where he was going. He looked at me and said "I am going to go call and buy your puppy". Dawn later told us that she knew we would call back when we drove out her drive. She also said she had determined if we didn't take him, she would keep him herself. Presley hadn't been home very long before I realized how wrong I had been. I did need him, He and I have a very special bond. I'm not sure who loves the other more. You will notice Presley is the dog I described to Larry as my Someday dog. I think God put the heart on his chest as a bonus reminder to me that Presley was a gift of love from Larry to Me.

Bryan and Dawn, I hope you know how much my brindle brat means to me. He and I were meant to be together. I can't imagine having missed the opportunity to have Presley in our family. Some say he is spoilt rotten, I say he is just well loved! I should know, I cuddle with him all the time and he sure doesn't smell rotten! Thanx again, Eva

Because Presley was a singleton puppy, Dawn decided to name him for an old "Elvis" hit. That is how his call name became Presley.
